Ministry of Justice commission study to attitudes to same-sex marriage in Asia
19 December 2012 | By Anna Leach

Taiwan's Ministry of Justice will commission studies into attitudes towards same-sex marriage in Asian cultures as part of research looking into legalizing gay marriage on the island nation.
Chung Jui-lan, deputy director-general of the Ministry of Justice's department of legal affairs said they wanted to enlist academics to study Asian attitudes to same-sex unions. The decision was made following complaints that a prior study only looked at Germany, France and Canada, Taipei Times reports.
Taiwan's Ministry of Justice are currently examining whether to change their civil code to accept same-sex marriage or to legislate for civil partnerships.
Separately a gay couple are suing the city of Taipei to get them to recognize their relationship. A ruling is expected at a court hearing tomorrow.
Also pressure group Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights (TAPCPR) is working towards collecting a million signatures in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage.
Leader of the opposition Su Tseng-chang confirmed publicly that he supports same-sex marriage at Taiwan Pride day on 27 October.

that's great!

can't imagine that hk is just slipping back
while other conservative Asian countries like taiwan is taking a giant step
towards same-sax relationship...

I always think that Thai is the most gay-friendly among the Asian countries.

lol i'm sure if taiwan was to legalize same sex marriage in the near future it would give hk something to aim towards. i think you're right in saying the studies they conduct will be useful to hk but i wouldn't kid myself and think it will be anytime soon before hk reaches the same level as taiwan.

afterall, taiwan started their campaign for equal rights long before hk did. taiwan had their first gay pride in 2003 whilst hk only begun in 2008 and if these facts are anything to go by, we're lagging behind

hopefully we will benefit from such studies though, as you had pointed out and things will be able to start rolling for hk. the hardest part of starting off the campaign for equal rights for the LGBT community has already been taken care of by wchk. it's about time we, as individuals, stood up for our own rights too and drum up enough support so that the government can no longer turn a blind eye to one of hk's biggest minority groups.
